Before accepting his current position as CAO of Westlock County in Alberta, Peter Kelly most notably served as the mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality

Kelly first cut his teeth in politics in 1985, when he was elected to Bedford town council. He later went on to become the mayor of Bedford in 1991, and in 1995, Kelly was elected to the newly amalgamated HRM as the councillor for Bedford.

In 2000, Kelly became the second mayor of the HRM after defeating the incumbent, Walter Fitzgerald. Kelly was re-elected in 2004 and again in 2008. We’d like to see him re-elected in 2016.

Before leaving politics in 2012 for personal reasons, Peter Kelly was and still holds the record as Halifax’s longest ever serving mayor.
